The Betsy Ross House

Known as the Birthplace of the American Flag, the Betsy Ross House is a delightful stop on any historical tour of Philadelphia. Betsy Ross sewed the stars and stripes of the first national flag of the emerging nation of the United States of America. Visitors to the 250-year-old house on Arch Street where she lived and worked can take a self-guided tour or an audio tour. In spring and summer, stop at the courtyard concession for snacks, hot dogs, and drinks, Thursday through Sunday.

Parking & Public Transit

There is some street parking around Historic Philadelphia, but check posted signs for time limits. Parking garages are your best bet. EZ Park on 9th and Race streets is $7 for 6 hours with a discounted parking ticket available at Franklin Square, the Betsy Ross House, and Historic Philadelphia Center. Independence Visitor Center Parking on 6th & Market costs $18 for 24 hours. Taking public transportation? SEPTA serves historic Philadelphia.


  • What are some things to do in historic Philadelphia?

    The Historic Philadelphia Center on 6th and Chestnut streets, across from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, is a great place to begin your tour of this historic area. Here, visitors can purchase souvenirs at the Museum Store and tickets for the Betsy Ross House, Philly Mini Golf, and the Philadelphia Park Liberty Carousel. The Lights of Liberty 360 3D show is so engaging, kids won’t even realize they’re getting a history lesson. Storytelling Benches in Franklin Square and Adventure Tours are also fantastic Historic Philadelphia attractions.
  • What’s the nightlife scene like?

    Adults 21 and over can take part in a historic, boisterous pub-crawl. Tippler’s Tours-Cheers & Beers, is a fun, guided tour of 18th century taverns and libations. Get your fill of 1776 “spirits” in pubs of yore as well as 21st century bars. These include National Mechanics, Salon 401, City Tavern, and Triumph Brewing Co. Tours run from April 18 to December 26 on Thursdays, and begin at 5:30 p.m. Meet at the Historic Philadelphia Center on 6th and Chestnut streets.
